SteamVR + HTC Vive Troubleshooting
Welcome to the troubleshooting guide for the HTC Vive + SteamVR. Troubleshooting for the first generation development kit can be found here.
If you have a Vive Pre Developer kit, the troubleshooting instructions below will also apply to you. The only difference is the Vive Pre uses white LEDs instead of green LEDs to signify that a device is ready to be used.
For a guided troubleshooting experience, please visit the SteamVR help site.
General PC Troubleshooting
Please ensure that you have optimized your PC Settings for SteamVR by completing the following steps:
- Set your PC's power plan to "High performance" (Press the Windows key > Type: power > Select "Power Options" > Select "High performance")
- Set NVIDIA power management to "prefer maximum performance" as outlined here.
- Get the latest drivers from NVIDIA or AMD.
- Set your default audio playback device to HTC-VIVE-0.
- Make sure you are running Steam as an administrator.
SteamVR Troubleshooting (Index)
General troubleshooting
The following steps solve the majority of issues. Before following any of the additional instructions below, please be sure to:
- Verify Integrity of Tool Files (in the Steam Client, navigate to Library and type "SteamVR" in the search box, then right-click SteamVR and select Properties... > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Tool Files).
- Check your graphics driver versions and update if necessary - see Updating Drivers.
- Restart SteamVR and test your issue again.
- Rerun Room Setup from the SteamVR status window.
- Restart Windows.
Headset is not connecting or loses connection
Check all of your headset's connections. If you see any of the messages below, securing loose cables and restarting the heaset (SteamVR menu > Devices. Restart headset) can resolve the issue.
- Headset Display Disconnected
- Headset not Detected
- Laptop: Headset Display Disconnected
SteamVR fails to start, quits unexpectedly or is unresponsive
Start by performing all the steps from the General Troubleshooting section above. If your problem persists, you can try running SteamVR in safe mode:
- Type "run" into the Windows search bar.
- Type "vrmonitor://safemode/enable" into the Run window.
- You can exit safe mode at any time from the dialog above the SteamVR status window.
If safe mode has not resolved your issue, click "Contact Steam Support" below to get help.
SteamVR Safe Mode
SteamVR's safe mode prevents the loading of some third party drivers and other components that can cause problems. If safe mode resolves your issue, it is likely that you have installed something that is interfering with SteamVR. For example, some VR "utility" applications such as Natural Locomotion and LIV are known to conflict with SteamVR in some cases.
Index Controller Troubleshooting
General troubleshooting
Before reading further, be sure to:
- Ensure your device is charged and powered.
- Ensure your firmware is up to date.
- Restart SteamVR.
Input Issues
Track Button
Responsiveness and output can be affected if the controller detects input on the Track Button while it is being powered on. If the Track Button does not seem to be registering input or feels sluggish, try these steps:
- Hold down the System button for 5 seconds to turn the controller off.
- Wait 2 seconds.
- Power the controller back on by pressing the System Button. Make sure you do not touch the Track Button.
Try this a couple of times. If the problem persists, go to Help With Valve Index to contact Steam Support regarding the issue.
Issue with legacy bindings or app-specific input
Titles without native Index Controller support should automatically map existing control schemes and work without additional customization. If you would like to remap these controls or load a custom controller binding from the Steam Workshop, you can do so by going to the SteamVR status window, opening the menu, and selecting Devices>Configure Controller.
For advanced information about how to use the legacy input system to create custom controller bindings, you can check out our rebinding guide.
